What You Can Expect To Work On The Assistant Radiation Safety Officer, in collaboration with the RSO, is responsible for the leadership and framework of radiation safety across the organization including managing, mitigating, and/or eliminating risks to Niowave’s employees, contractors, facilities, environment, and communities in which the company operates. This position assists the Radiation Safety Officer in providing support, strategic direction, tactical execution, and policy guidance for radiation safety at Niowave. In the absence of the RSO, the Assistant RSO assumes the duties of the RSO. Support radiation safety plans to ensure conformance with regulatory and company requirements. Develop, implement, and maintain radiation safety policies, procedures, and programs. Lead the Radiation Safety Committee. Lead emergency response as required for the radiological facilities and participate in the upkeep and training of emergency response plans. Collaborate closely with the Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) team to assure alignment between radiation safety and EH&S policies and procedures. Support and participate in communications and audits with NRC and state regulatory bodies regarding radioactive material or x-ray producing machines. Serve as a technical radiation safety resource for the management team. Effectively build and maintain collaborative relations with colleagues and radiation workers. Coach all levels of the organization on the benefits of a Safety First culture. What You Need To Succeed Bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering, health physics, physics, or other related technical field. 4+ years of professional experience in nuclear engineering, health physics, radiation safety, or related field. 4+ years working in an NRC (or equivalent) regulated environment. 2+ years’ experience as assistant RSO. Great to have Master’s degree or PhD in Nuclear Engineering, Health Physics, physics, or related technical field. 7+ years of professional experience in nuclear engineering, health physics, radiation safety, or related field. 7+ years working in an NRC (or equivalent) regulated environment. 4+ years leading NRC and/or state licensing activities including preparation and submission of new license or license amendments. 4+ years serving as RSO at facility that contains solid and dispersible forms of radioactive material and x-ray producing machines. Proven experience in enforcing regulatory requirements and compliance standards and passing regulatory inspections without major findings. Formal RSO training course (Dade Moeller Training Academy 40-hour RSO Training with DOT certification). Other Things To Note Full‑time position. The company’s standard operating hours are Monday thru Friday 6a – 6p with production related activities requiring 24/7/365 shifts. This position will have regular working hours during M – F with an expectation of adjusting to working outside of the standard operating hours as needed. The Radiation Safety Officer will be part of a rotating team that holds a 24/7 emergency hot‑line to respond to emergencies. Niowave has multiple locations within the Lansing area. Travel between locations is expected in the role.
