Job Title: Managing Editor (Part-Time)

Industry: Non-Profit / Scientific Publications / Medical Research

Location: Washington, DC (Remote)

Assignment Type: Long-term contract (open-ended, potential for permanent hire)

Pay: $23–$26/hour (commensurate with experience)

Work Schedule: Approximately 25–30 hours per week | Flexible hours within standard business hours (7:00 AM–6:00 PM EST). Weekly call required on Tuesdays at 7:00 AM.

Benefits: This position is eligible for medical, dental, vision, and 401(k).

Additional Details: This is a remote opportunity; occasional optional onsite meetings may be available. Overtime is not anticipated.

Job Description:

We are seeking a Part-Time Managing Editor to support the operations of one of our client’s scientific journals. This role is ideal for a publishing professional experienced in managing the peer review and production process for scientific or medical content. The Managing Editor will oversee manuscript workflows, ensure deadlines are met, and maintain smooth coordination among authors, reviewers, and editorial staff.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage all aspects of manuscript submission, peer review, revision, and publication through online editorial platforms.
  • Collaborate with editors, reviewers, and contributors to ensure efficient processing and adherence to publication timelines.
  • Generate and interpret submission and publication reports (e.g., acceptance rates, review turnaround times).
  • Maintain regular communication with the editorial board and internal stakeholders.
  • Oversee production schedules to ensure quality standards and deadlines are consistently met.
  • Prepare meeting materials, maintain correspondence, and document editorial board decisions.
  • Coordinate with communications and digital publishing teams on online content release and scheduling.
  • Support special projects and assist in implementing workflow improvements as needed.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 3–5 years of experience in scientific, academic, or medical publishing (peer-reviewed journal experience required).
  • Familiarity with online peer review systems such as ScholarOne, Editorial Manager, BenchPress, or eJournalPress .
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and comfort working with data reports.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to communicate professionally with editors and contributors.
